Defining Time

Defining Time

Have you ever wondered what time really is? Not what time it is currently, but what is time and if time is really as it seems.  Defining time is difficult.

The concept of time consists of many minutes which has a certain amount of seconds. An hour with many minutes, a day with many hours, and a year with many days. This could all be considered a conspiracy.

“The dividing line between past, present and future is an illusion” -Einstein

From Einstein’s quote, he states that the dividing line between past, present and future tense is an illusion. So in other words, he is stating that reality is timeless. Although our common sense tells us otherwise, time is relative and flexible. The past, present and future are all equally real. Time, is tenseless.

Think of time as in fourth dimension, although you cannot see it or feel it, we believe it’s there. Think about this, if time is real, then who made it? How did he or she know what time it was in the first place?

Defining Time

Time Travel

In some TV shows or movies, characters tend to “bend time,” or time travel. These movies would be considered fiction. What if I told you we could change that. Believe it or not, we will be able to time travel, although not currently.

It would be impossible to go into the past without there being a time machine both in the present and the past. If we were to make a time machine now; then later on in life we could travel back to present-day 2020.

Fact, while going at the speed of light, all other time stops. If you were moving at the speed of light for a year; when you returned, everything would be the exact same as you left it. Or in scientific terms; when an object moves at high speed, the same object will also get shorter in its direction of motion.

Defining Time

Time Is An Illusion

Marina Abramovic once said “Time is an illusion. Time only exists when we think about the past and the future. Time doesn’t exist in the present here or now.” She is saying that time is an illusion for us, and only us. In the future and the past, it is very much real. But we can’t get there because we are always in the present, therefore time is an illusion.

When you sleep, has it ever occurred to you that you don’t actually close your eyes for 7-9 hours? But only for a brief 3-10 minutes? Well, you do close your eyes for 8 hours but you don’t realize it. This happens because you technically make yourself unconscious. Although there is no real reason why while sleeping, time flies past; there is a reason for why we get short dreams and nightmares.

Someone feeling sad or mad might experience a longer nightmare while someone who is glad might experience a short dream. This happens not only while sleeping, but this occurs while you’re awake as well although not as apparent.

When you are happy, the day seems short and seems to fly by. But if you are upset, the day seems long. It’s as time and emotions have its own alternate universe.

Time Does Not Stop

We all have an average lifespan of 79 years. Our life revolves around this so-called time that we aren’t using efficiently. “How long until dinner, give me a minute, almost done.” We have all said those things. The reality of it is that time doesn’t wait for you or me, it continues, it doesn’t stop.

Time is not the hands on the clock or how long it takes you to do something. Time is so much more. It sounds simple but in reality, we are living in the present, the past and the future. We are living today and tomorrow. How would you define time?

When defining time, I must say that time is an illusion, it’s just how you perceive it, time is non-existent.
